The Marshmallow test measures a child’s ability to delay gratification.
The child is offered an option of waiting to get the treat he or she likes, or if not waiting for it, receiving a less desired treat.
One of the tests has found that preschoolers waited much less time when the treats were within sight rather than they were not in view.

gratification: pleasure.
treat: something that gives pleasure (e.g. sweets)
less desired: not liked so much.
within sight: when one can see something.
