If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it
If something is working properly, it is best to leave it alone and not make any changes that could break it.
Origin
Bert Lance, who worked for President Jimmy Carter, popularized this phrase in 1977 when trying to persuade the government to adopt it as a motto. He explains: “That’s the trouble with government. Fixing things that aren’t broken and not fixing things that are broken.”
