Michael, better known as Eddie the Eagle, was the first Briton to take part in Olympic ski jumping in 1988.

He developed his passion for skiing after a school skiing trip when he was 13.

His disadvantages of being far-sighted and overweight for this Olympic discipline did not deter him from achieving his sports dream.

Let alone a lack of financial support for training meant he had to self-fund it. And many times it resulted in sleeping in barns, eating leftovers from hotels and borrowing ski jumping equipment, he said.

WORDS
to deter: to discourage, to dissuade.
