The present progressive tense describes an action which happens at the time of speaking or which is intensive in certain time period (it does not have to happen at the time of speaking).
It is created by using the following:
be (in the present tense) + verb with ing
Positive sentence
I am writing the letter.
This semester we are studying German.
Negative sentence
We are not watching TV.
They are not going to school this week.
Question
Is he doing his homework?
Are they working in the garden now?
Action which is intensive in certain time period
I am studying French this semester ( I did not study French last semester).
We are not going to school this week (Each spring our school spends a week cleaning our town).
The present progressive tense can also point out to the near future.
I am talking to him tomorrow.
We are leaving in the evening.
