To work harder, to improve your behavior or performance when it is not good enough.

“Vlad, the team needs you to pull up your socks in order to win the match.” 

ORIGIN 
The phrase was first used at the end of of the 19 century. And it is possibly related to the action of athletes adjusting their socks to show readiness for the start of a race.
