Put a sock in it!
Used to tell someone to stop talking or shouting and be quiet.
Origin
This is a British phrase that originated in the 20th century. The story goes that the phrase refers to early gramophones that had no volume control and people would put a sock in the horn, producing the sound, to turn it down. Can it be true?
