Every year locomotives steam in to the city of Zvolen to compete in this very popular event.

The engines come to this central Slovakian railway marshalling yard from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Luxembourg, Poland and Great Britain.

The competition opens with the most popular event, the 100-metre sprint. Other unusual races and tasks follow on, including a race with a beer can placed on the engine buffers.

This crowd pleasing festival started in 1998. Every year it is visited by more than 5000 steam railway buffs.

Words
to steam: (of a train or ship) to travel by using steam.
