Breadwinner is the member of a family who supports it financially. It was usually a male head of a family in the past.
Nowadays there are usually households with dual income and the term is used for the one who has a better paid job.
Origin
Bread has been considered a staple food for centuries. And those who got higher wages could probably afford to buy more loaves of bread and therefore could better support their family.
