Icelandic children and teens belonged to the heaviest drinking youths in Europe twenty years ago.

It was dangerous to stroll in downtown Reykjavík, the capital city of Iceland, on Friday night as there were hundreds of drunk teenagers.

The state increased funding for organized recreation such as sport, art, music, dance and other clubs and each child receives 400 € to spend on recreational activities.

The percentage of 15- and 16-year-olds who had been drunk in the previous month plummeted from 42 per cent in 1998 to 5 per cent in 2016.
