In many countries this day is also called Saint Sylvester’s Day after Pope Sylvester I who died on December 31.

People in many countries celebrate this event by attending parties, drinking champagne, watching fireworks and making resolutions for the new year.

In Italy people believe that wearing red underwear on this day will bring them good luck all year long.
