Raining Cats And Dogs

English Idioms

Raining cats and dogs

When someone says “It’s raining cats and dogs”, they mean that it is raining heavily.

Origin
One of the theories is that animals used to sleep on the eaves of the houses in the Victorian era. During a heavy rain they were washed away  and fell to the ground. It is likely a false theory.
