Adolph Sax was born in the Belgian city of Dinant. He invented the saxophone 177 years ago.

In 1842, he moved to Paris where he had his saxophone patented in 1846.

It took almost 100 years for the instrument to become popular.

The soft dulcet tones of the saxophone are especially favoured in jazz, a type of American music which is characterized by improvisation.
