Today a reader from Uruguay is sharing a recipe with us.
Fried cakes (or tortas fritas) is an Uruguayan recipe for rainy, cold days.

Ingredients
3 1/2 cups of flour
1 cup of fat (neither butter nor oil)
1/2 tsp of salt
3 spoons of warm water (or what’s needed to form a soft dough)

Instructions
Mix the flour with the fat and the salt. Add enough water to form a soft dough. Leave it for half an hour.

Knead the dough until soft and warm. You should even hit it!

Then make small balls and use the rolling pin to form big circles. Make a small cut in the centre of it.

Put them in really hot fat to fry them. Don’t worry if the first one gets burnt! The fat should be really hot.

The secret of this delicious easy dish is to knead it for a looooong time before frying them.
