The First Nuclear Weapons Used In Armed Conflict

On  August 6, 1945 the United States dropped an atomic bomb, named “Little Boy”, on the Japanese city of Hiroshima.

Three days later, on  August 9, a second bomb, “Fat Man”,  was detonated  over the city of Nagasaki.  

The centers of the cities were reduced to ashes and the initial explosions killed more than 200 thousand people.

Many more would later succumb to radiation poisoning.

There are nine countries which possess nuclear weapons: the United States, Russia, India, Pakistan, France, the United Kingdom, Israel and North Korea.
