Tony Amato, a butcher’s son, decided to change his life in New York and make his dream come true.

With his wife Sally standing firmly beside him, he founded the Amato Opera in 1948.

The auditorium had around 100 seats. At first, performances were for free, with Tony passing his hat around the audience during intervals.

The Amato Opera also provided a great opportunity for young musical students to perform and gain valuable experience.

On May 31, 2009, after a performance of “The Marriage of Figaro”, the curtain finally dropped forever on the world’s smallest opera house.
