Arkhipov was a Soviet Navy officer and a deputy commander of the ballistic missile submarine K-19 during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962.

He was the only one, of the three senior officers on board, who refused to authorize a nuclear torpedo attack against the United States Navy.

This shy and humble man received the first „Future of Life Award“ which was presented posthumously to his family in 2017.
