Droupadi Murmu is President of the world’s most populous country India with its population of 1.5 billion people.
She was born in the village of Uparbeda in 1958. The village has only five hundred houses.
Her father was a farmer.
Her first job was an assistant at the irrigation department of a local government in 1978. Then she became a teacher and taught Hindi, maths and geography.
In 1997 she was elected a councillor as an independent candidate.
