Easy Grammar: There + Be + Noun

THERE + BE +NOUN

There are problems.

There were other solutions, too.

There is a high unemployment rate there.

There will not be any benefits this year.

Are there any books on the table?

There must be several other apples there.

Has there been any money left there?

The word “there” in this expression supplements a subject at the beginning of a sentence. (A sentence in English cannot start with a verb.)

There + Be + Noun + Verb with ing

If we wish to use a verb after a noun in this expression then the verb must be with ing.

There is a strange dog running up and down in our garden.

There was a woman walking down the street.
